I must have visited St. Patrick’s Cathedral here in Melbourne more than a dozen times during the year and it’s only now that I have noticed this amazing detail.
There are stone faces on each side of every window, and not one of them is the same.
It was a detail that, once I noticed it, I couldn’t un-notice it so there was only one thing for me to do and that was to photograph them all!
The thing that kept going through my mind was whether these were just faces that the sculptor made up or were they created from real life models?
Some of them were quite stately in appearance, and others were a little disturbing and dark but again, not one of them was the same, and I found that to be a fascinating detail.
I wonder what the significance of these faces might be about in relation to the gothic architecture?
